IE 7 exploit in the wild
Microsoft have released a huge load of updates this week to fix critical security issues but it seems it has overlooked a big one.
An exploit for Internet Explorer 7 has been identified and code published on the internet. The vulnerbility could allow remote code execution. Shadowserver.org has a list of infected sites here, although this list is in no way comprehensive.
Unless MS release another out of cycle patch to fix this problem IE7 users without DEP eneabled will be vulnerable until after christmas.
Microsoft have released a security advisory and recommend enabling data execution prevention (DEP) in IE7. Personally I would recommend a different browser.
Do you use IE7? Personally I have not used IE for about 4 years now but even still, some sites and web GUIs are just easier in IE so you gotta keep it around.

Microsoft is set to go after the sellers of illegal copies of it’s operating systems, often dubbed ‘Blue Edition’. Microsoft’s legal action targets sellers in 12 nations, including the UK, US, France and Germany. Most of the cases have been selling Windows XP which stopped being installed on new PCs in June 2008.

Macs are safe after all?
Apple took down the knowledgebase article which advised: “Apple encourages the widespread use of multiple antivirus utilities so that virus programmers have more than one application to circumvent, thus making the whole virus writing process more difficult.” An apple spokesman commented “The Mac is designed with built-in technologies that provide protection against malicious software and security threats right out of the box,” he said. “However, since no system can be 100 percent immune from every threat, running antivirus software may offer additional protection.” Right… Well I guess I will just keep with my current strategy of installing software updates and trying to avoid dodgy sites and softwares. What is your strategy for staying safe on your mac?

Last week apple posted this article (apple removed this article) on their knowledge base recommending the use of anti virus software on mac OS X For a while Mac OS users (including myself) have been happy in the knowledge that viruses can’t harm us, and they are just for windows users. Well I wasn’t that ignorant but I was happy in the knowledge that there was much less malware aimed at mac users than windows users which makes a lot of sense since Microsoft have held over 90% of the share of desktops for a long time, it would make sense to create malware for such a popular platform. With macs now holding around an 8% market share on desktops they will no doubt be more and more malware coming to a macbook near you soon. With this said, careful use of your computers is always the best policy in my opinion. I have not had a virus for a while on my Windows machines and I put this down the not being as click happy as I was in my younger years. I do think as time goes on and the user base grows mac users will have to be more wary of malware but for now I am not that worried. Do you use AV software on your macs?

Tweetie – iPhone Twitter Client
For a long time I have been trying out different Twitter apps on the iPhone and not been totally satisfied with what I have found, until yesterday. I decided to try out Tweetie and found it to be exactly what I was looking for. If you have an iPhone and use twitter then I strongly suggest you look into this app. My favorite part is the trends and the ability to create and save custom searches. At £1.79 this app is a bargain. Here are the features as posted on the website:

update: We could be getting a beta as soon as January Signs are that Windows 7 may be coming sooner than released, maybe as soon as mid-year 2009. It is no secret that MS messed up letting the image of Vista take such a serious beating, maybe Microsoft just want all this to be forgotten and move on to the next version? The question looming for me now is do we roll out Vista next year or wait it out and go for Windows 7, the reviews are favorable for the upcoming operating system so far and with Server 2008 R2 looming on the horizon it may be time to change plans and hold off with the 2008/Vista implementations. Find out more about Windows 7. What are your thoughts on Vista for enterprise?

Small Basic
At lunch time I was playing with a very simple programming language called small basic I had read about on Lifehacker last week. Seems like a good way to get a simple understanding of programming. I have only dipped my toe in C# and use vbscript now and again for getting things done with write once use once scripts. Is this a good language to get started with or would it be best to jump right in to something else?
